Department eyes long awaited roadworks
PLANNING is underway for long-awaited repairs to the Cobden-Warrnambool Road, a Department of Transport and Planning executive director has confirmed.
Residents recently raised questions via social media regarding a stretch of Cobden-Warrnambool Road between Cobden and Glenfyne after noticing speed reduction and rough surface signage had been removed.
In response to questions from Western District Newspapers, Department of Transport and Planning executive director Barwon South West Michael Bailey confirmed crews had been in attendance last Friday making assessments.
Western District Newspapers had questioned why the signs were removed and if upgrades were coming.
While Mr Bailey confirmed repairs were currently being planned, no specific details on when upgrades could be expected and what works would involve were provided.
“While we plan the required repairs for this section of Cobden-Warrnambool Road, our crews will continue to regularly inspect the road and monitor the effectiveness of the reduced speed limit and additional warning signage in place,” he said.
Western District Newspapers understands crews are inspecting the arterial network on a regular basis, including Cobden-Warrnambool Road.
These inspections help to identify any repairs required on our roads, along with any developing hazards.
A major road maintenance blitz is underway to rebuild, repair and resurface roads right across south west of Victoria thanks to the largest single-year investment towards road maintenance in the state’s history.
Between now and mid-2025, a massive road maintenance blitz is happening across Victoria, with an army of workers set to deliver more than $964 million of works.
Western District Newspapers reported in September 2024 the section of road had been reduced to 60km, which at the time Mr Bailey stated routine inspections had identified “necessary repairs” were required to improve the section of road.
