Finals await women

THE final round of the Colac District Cricket Association women’s competition was played last Sunday, with Pomborneit Gold defeating Apollo Bay while Pomborneit Maroon lost to Simpson.


At Pomborneit, Apollo Bay batted first and were bowled out for 49 in the 22nd over.

Tayla Reynolds was dynamic with the new ball, taking the first three wickets and reducing the Sharks to 3/10.

Jada Mahony took 2/11 from four overs, while Lucia Clarke took 2/3 from five economical overs.

“We were really on with the ball and in the field,” Gold captain Samantha Coxon said.

“Tayla was incredible early, she’s bowling good lines and with really good pace at the moment.”

In reply, Gold raced to 3/112 from 16 overs when the call was made to end the game.

Reynolds and Coxon put on 37 for the first wicket; Reynolds making 17 from 18 balls, Coxon 19 from 22.

Jess Moulden came out and batted at a strike rate of 253, scoring 33 retired from 13 balls with six fours and a six.

“Tayla and I were steady at the start; we were pleased with how we got close to their score before losing a wicket.

“Jess was brutal, she’s so good to watch when she hits the ball like that.”

Gold finish the home and away season on top of the ladder and will host second placed Simpson in the first week of the finals on Sunday at Pomborneit.

“Simpson has had a great season so we are expecting a really tough game.

“We’re well prepared and looking forward to playing finals.”

Maroon, in their final game for the season, were well beaten by Simpson, bowled out for just 37 batting first.

Isla Spokes top scored with 10 from 23 balls.

Simpson replied with 6/141 from its 25 overs.

In the under 17 girls on Friday night, Pomborneit had an 80 run win down at Apollo Bay.

Straight off the bus taken for the trip, Pomborneit batted first, scoring 2/182 from its 20 overs.

Charlotte Richardson with 32 from 51 balls, Lilli Saarikallio with 30 from 28 and Isla Spokes with 31 from 16 balls all reached the 30 run retirement mark.

In reply Apollo Bay made 6/102 from its 20 overs.

Isabelle Pilley took 3/19 from three overs, with Lilli Saarikallio and Isabella Wain taking a wicket each.

The under 17 girls, in fourth spot on the ladder, play Irrewarra Red at Pomborneit tonight in the last home and away match of the season.

Pomborneit’s under 13 girls team finished the season on top of the ladder after a 38 run win over Colac at Pomborneit on Sunday.

Batting first, Pomborneit made 143 from its 20 overs.

Zoe Unwin top scored with 23, Pippa Murphy made 13 while Scarlett Saarikallio made 12.

Colac replied with 105, Scarlett Whitehead taking a hat-trick in her 3/4 from three overs.

The grand final of the under 13 competition is this Sunday, where Pomborneit will play Tomahawk Creek at Colac Secondary College Oval at 9.30am on Sunday.
