Frogs face the unknown
ECKLIN’S cricketers head to a new frontier this Saturday as the Frogs start their season with a trip to the Alvie Recreation Reserve.
The first ever clash between the two clubs is part of the inaugural round of the Colac-South West premier division one competition.
“It’s a great opportunity to play in this new look format,” Ecklin president Troy Logan said.
“We’re seeing it as a positive playing new teams, for some of us older guys it’s something pretty different.”
For the Frogs, Alvie are very much an unknown quantity.
“It will be different playing Alvie, we really don’t know much at all about them.
“With the South West comp you regularly had clear favourites, it feels like anything could happen in a lot of these games.”
Bowling all-rounder Harry Bee, who hails from the Sandwich Town CC in Kent, will debut as the club’s latest English recruit.
“We’re really excited to see Harry play, he’s been very impressive at training.”
In his second season at Ecklin, Englishman Jamie Dewell takes over as division one captain.
“Jamie has a lot of cricket experience at a decent level.
“He showed as vice-captain last year how good tactically he is, we’re really excited to see what his leadership brings.”
Logan also praised former captain Tyson Royal for his work.
“I really couldn’t speak highly enough of what Tyson did last year in moving our top grade cricket forward.
“He’s living in Cairns now but still in regular touch and supporting us.”
Numbers remain strong at Ecklin as the Frogs will field three senior teams for the second year in a row.
“There’s always lots of work to put out three teams every week.
“Our division three team will be full of father son combos and we’ll continue to bring our juniors into senior cricket.”
