Orchid show to take off
THE annual Cobden Orchid Show will bring hundreds of flowers to the Cobden Civic Hall this weekend.

Cobden and District Orchid Club life member Denise Robertson said the show will bring a splash of colour to Cobden.
“This is going to be our 27th show – should be 29th but we didn’t hold a show for two years through COVID,” she said.
“The civic hall covered in flowers would be lovely, in all different sorts.
“It’s a mass of different varieties of plants.
“Orchids are quite addictive – you just have to look at themand you fall in love with them.
“I think getting everybody together and just showcasing what Cobden’s got is good.”
Mrs Robertson said while the orchid club wasn’t what it used to be, the members were still busy, especially throughout October.
“The numbers are dwindling down in our club, I’d say we have about 30 members – we meet the second Friday of each month,” she said.
“This month is busy – we had the Warrnambool show recently that we go in and then we have Colac and ours.
“We share – they come down and support us and we support them.
“There is a grand champion and I’ve never had the privilege of winning the grand champion but we have eight judges who come down from all parts of Victoria.
“It’s pretty hard to select the best out of all of the orchids, but they know what they’re looking for.”
The show will run on Saturday, October 18 from 9.30am to 4pm and Sunday, October 19 from 10am to 3pm.
Entry is $5 and a raffle will run on the day.
Mrs Robertson said the show was the club’s only fundraiser for the year, and it was thanks to a grant from Corangamite Shire Council they are able to keep things running smoothly.
She said she was looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend enjoying the display of orchids in the hall.
