Crashing down: A large tree branch which fell over a fence at a Leura Street address was among the callouts Camperdown’s State Emergency Services (SES) unit received.

Camperdown SES incident controller Bray Wright said the unit was called out to a total of 12 jobs over the course of the day.

“We re called out at about 4.45am to our first job, which as a tree down over a powerline – that was called through by the Country Fire Authority (CFA) seeking our assistance,” he said.

“We had two trees down causing property damage which we inspected and handed over to the arborists – we deemed them safe, but they were outside our scope.

“In the afternoon, we had a few extra jobs call through – there was a tree downed over a powerline connected to a residence, so we closed the road to make it safe and got Powercor in.

“The other one was a tree down over a footpath.”

A crew of six volunteers were on the road during the day.

Mr Wright praised the efforts of the local volunteers, who worked hard to support community safety.

“A big thank you to every volunteer in the whole of Victoria – whether it was CFA or SES – for the jobs they had done in tough conditions,” he said.

“Thanks also to the public for slowing down and taking notice of the red and blue flashing lights.

“We’re always on the lookout for more volunteers – anything from truck drivers to admin.

“Any volunteer helps.

“People can get involve by going onto the SES website and putting through an application of interest, or they can come down to the unit on a Monday night at 7pm – we’ll be training and they can come down and see what we’re all about.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for the SES can visit www.ses.vic.gov.au/join-us/volunteer or attend a training session at the unit at 4 Bowyer Street.
