Hitting the trails: Marilyn McKinley and Barbara Rees were among the more than 30 members of the Terang Walking Group to traverse Noorat last week as the group looks ahead to another successful year.

Last week members of the group travelled to Noorat to explore the little village at the foot of Mount Noorat, seeing new sights and making friends along the way.

Among the group were long-time members Margaret McKinley and Barbara Rees, who have been members almost as long as the group has been active – over 25 years.

Mrs McKinley said the weekly meetings were not only an opportunity to stay active, but to also build new friendships along the way.

“You’re getting out and meeting new people,” she said.

“You get to be part of the community and it’s great to make those friendships.

“We always have our cup of tea and a chat.”

Mrs Rees said the social aspect was also a highlight for her.

“It’s very much a social occasion,” she said.

“Instead of sitting at home, you’re getting out and talking to other people.

“A lot of the people in our group are on their own, so it’s nice to get out.”

Mrs McKinley said anyone interested was invited to come along, no matter their ability level.

“Everyone is welcome to join no matter their abilities - we’ve got some members on mobility walkers and walking sticks,” Mrs McKinley said.

“We have different walkers of all abilities, with different groups coming short, medium and long distances.”

Mrs Rees said in addition to weekly walks, the group also plans outings each month to heighten the social aspect of the group.

“We try to have something special every month - such as a trip to other places like Mortlake or Cobden,” she said.

“We also have special outings where we have barbecues and that.”

The group meets every Wednesday at 9.30am, at the Terang Senior Citizens Centre on The Promenade.

Anyone interested in joining or learning more is invited to attend on the day.
